Processing of a premix of ferrous powder into PM components incorporates compaction, sintering, machining and heat-treatment if necessary. Each of these processing steps influences the final mechanical properties of the PM part. Although PM is considered a net shape metal working process, secondary operations are often required to satisfy part specifications. The secondary operations can include machining, surface densification, welding and joining, etc.
